Dominik Mysterio – Career Biography, Statistics, Accomplishments and Information

He may carry the Mysterio name, but Dominik wants nothing more than to be remembered off of his own merits and actions and not that of his apparent ‘deadbeat dad’.

Born Dominik Óscar Gutiérrez on the 5th of April 1997, ‘Dirty’ Dominik Mysterio is a professional wrestler signed to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where he performs for the WWE Raw brand as 1/4th of The Judgment Day. He also competes for WWE’s developmental brand, WWE NXT, where he is in his first reign as NXT North American Champion, a championship that he won on July 18th 2023 edition of WWE NXT. A third generation Mexican-American professional wrestler from San Diego, California, Dominik Mysterio stands at 6’1 and weighs 200lbs. Mysterio was trained by his father, Rey Mysterio, Jay Lethal, Lance Storm, Konnan and the training staff at the WWE Performance Center.

Since making his professional wrestling debut on the 23rd of August 2020 at WWE’s Premium Live Event, SummerSlam, Dominik has seen a number of accolades and championship wins in his relatively young career, with both of his championship victories holding historic value. Rey & Dominik Mysterio’s triumph over The Dirty Dawgs (Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode) at WrestleMania Backlash on the 16th of May 2021 handed Dominik his first taste of championship glory, and in turn made The Mysterios the first ever father-son duo to win Tag Team Championships within the WWE. Between the 17th and the 22nd of July 2023, Dominik Mysterio would make history again by becoming the first wrestler to main event WWE Raw, WWE NXT & WWE SmackDown in the same week, in which he claimed his first singles championship during the WWE NXT broadcast on the 18th of July 2023, defeating Wes Lee.

EARLY APPEARANCES AND TRAINING

Dominik Mysterio has been surrounded by professional wrestling his entire life, with his father Rey Mysterio Jr. already 8 years into his career by the time Dominik Mysterio was born. The day after Dominik’s birth saw Rey Mysterio Jr. defeat Ultimo Dragon at WCW Spring Stampede on the 6th of April 1997. Dominik’s grand uncle Rey Misterio Sr., as well as Misterio’s brother-in-law Super Astro, helped train Rey Mysterio Jr., as well as Dominik’s first cousins once removed, El Hijo De Rey Misterio and Metalika, and his godfather Konnan.

Considering the deep roots that his family have within professional wrestling, it came as no surprise to see Dominik making his first appearance on camera in the WWE at the age of 6 celebrating his father’s first singles championship win in the WWE. Rey Mysterio defeated Matt Hardy to become WWE Cruiserweight Champion on WWE SmackDown on the 5th of June 2003, with Dominik joining his father in the ring to celebrate as the broadcast went off the air. Dominik’s first storyline involvement would come in the summer of 2005, as Eddie Guerrero revealed himself to be Dominik’s kayfabe biological father, a rivalry between Guerrero & Rey that culminated in a ladder match at SummerSlam with the winner receiving custody of Dominik Mysterio, a match that Rey Mysterio would go on to win.

Dominik would appear twice in 2006, first at WrestleMania 22 alongside his mother Angie and his sister Aalyah, supporting Rey Mysterio as he defeated Randy Orton and Kurt Angle to become the World Heavyweight Champion for the first time in his career. He would then appear later in the year on WWE SmackDown on the 15th of September, backstage watching his father wrestle Mr. Kennedy. Dominik wouldn’t appear on WWE programming again for nearly 4 years until the 12th of March 2010 episode of WWE SmackDown at the age of 13, where CM Punk and his Straight Edge Society consisting of Luke Gallows & Serena Deeb interrupted the celebration of Dominik’s sister Aalyah’s 9th birthday.

Commencing training with his father and current All Elite Wrestling (AEW) wrestler Jay Lethal in late 2017, Rey Mysterio mapped out a training regime that would consist of Dominik learning styles of wrestling from 3 different countries, first with Lethal at Tampa Bay Pro Wrestling in the United States, before heading to train with former WWE star Lance Storm at the Storm Wrestling Academy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, as well as continuing his Lucha Libre training with Rey and former WCW star & godfather, Konnan. In the midst of his training Dominik would reappear on WWE programming for the first time as an adult, when he was seen on the 19th of March 2019 edition of SmackDown Live standing by his father’s side as Rey announced his match against WWE United States Champion Samoa Joe at WrestleMania 35. He continued to appear on WWE Raw between April and June of 2019 during his father’s feud with Joe.

DEBUTING AS A WWE SUPERSTAR, THE MYSTERIOS

Dominik Mysterio would become physically involved in storylines for the first time in his career during his father’s feud with Brock Lesnar over the WWE Championship, with Dominik and Rey suffering a vicious beatdown at the hands of Lesnar on the 30th of September 2019 broadcast of WWE Raw before interfering in Rey’s WWE Championship match against Lesnar at Survivor Series 2019, in which Dominik & Rey memorably hit a Double 619/Frog Splash and nearly secured the win and the title for Mysterio before Lesnar would go on to ultimately retain. Dominik would start his transition into active WWE competition during The Mysterio’s feud with Seth Rollins and his disciple Murphy. In a rivalry that involved the removal of Rey Mysterio’s eye during his & Seth Rollins’ Eye for an Eye match at The Horror Show at Extreme Rules in July of 2020, as well as a romantic angle between Murphy & Aalyah Mysterio, Dominik would make his in-ring debut on the 23rd of August, taking on Seth Rollins in Street Fight in which Rollins defeated Mysterio after curbstomping Dominik in front of his father after Rey has handcuffed to the 2nd rope and forced to watch. 7 days later, Rey & Dominik Mysterio would make their tag team debut, with Dominik hitting a 619 & Frog Splash to pin Murphy, securing inaugural victories for The Mysterio’s as well as Dominik as an individual.

Rey & Dominik would start their climb up the Tag Team rankings within the WWE, getting their first shot at the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships 4 days after Dominik’s 24th Birthday, in a 4-way Tag Match against The Street Profits’ Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford; Alpha Academy’s Chad Gable & Otis and the defending champions Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode, known as The Dirty Dawgs. Ziggler & Roode would retain after Roode pinned Chad Gable. A little over a month later at the WrestleMania Backlash Premium Live Event on the 16th of May 2021, The Mysterios received another shot at The Dirty Dawgs’ Tag Team Championships, this time with Dominik securing the win for his family after a Frog Splash on Robert Roode, winning his first championship within the WWE as well as etching the Mysterio name into WWE’s history books yet again, with Rey & Dominik becoming the first and only father-son tag team to win the titles, as well as Dominik becoming the youngest to ever hold the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at 24 years, 41 days old. The Mysterios would go onto lose the SmackDown Tag Team Championships 63 days later when they were defeated by The Usos on the 18th of July 2021 at the Money In The Bank Premium Live Event.

FEUDING & JOINING THE JUDGEMENT DAY

Dominik would receive his first WrestleMania storyline as Rey Mysterio’s feud with The Miz developed in February of 2022, as The Mysterios would be challenged to a Tag Team match against Miz and the debuting Logan Paul during Night 1 of WrestleMania 38 on the 2nd of April, a match that Miz & Paul won after The Miz pinned Rey Mysterio following a Skull Crushing Finale. The Mysterios would then find themselves opposing The Judgement Day, consisting of Damien Priest, Finn Bàlor and Rhea Ripley, who repeatedly attempted to recruit Dominik into the fold by planting doubt in his mind over whether or not Dominik would succeed more under his father’s tutelage or as part of The Judgement Day. With help from an interference from The Judgement Day’s former leader, Edge, Rey & Dominik defeated Bàlor & Priest after a Double 619 and a Frog Splash by Rey Mysterio onto Finn Bàlor for the pinfall. Cracks would begin to form between Dominik and Rey’s longtime friend in Edge on the 1st of August edition of WWE Raw, after a miscalculated Spear from Edge hit Dominik instead of Finn Bàlor thanks to a timed push of Dominik into harms way from Rhea Ripley. The following week tensions continued to rise, with Dominik confronting & shoving Edge before Rey’s scheduled match against Bàlor. During the contest, Ripley would drag a bloodied and beaten Dominik to the stage, distracting Mysterio for long enough to allow Bàlor to capitalise and win the match-up.

After accompanying Rey & Edge to ringside in their victorious effort against Priest & Bàlor at the WWE P.L.E. Clash at the Castle on the 3rd of September 2022, Dominik Mysterio would turn heel for the first time in his career, delivering a low blow to Edge and a wicked clothesline that drew parallels to the clothesline his ‘Uncle’ Eddie hit on Rey that pre-empted the rivalry surrounding the custody of Dominik. 2 days later on WWE Raw, Dominik would officially join the faction, joining a Judgement Day beatdown of Edge & Rey Mysterio. Mirroring his Uncle Eddie’s famous mannerisms during the height of Guerrero’s ‘Latino Heat’ days alongside his new “Mami” in Rhea Ripley, Dominik continued to goad, harass and assault his father in an attempt to convince Rey Mysterio to a match between them, a request that Rey repeatedly declined to the point of requesting a trade from WWE Raw to WWE SmackDown in an attempt to avoid his son. Rhea Ripley’s 2023 Royal Rumble victory and eventual decision to challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship, however, meant that Dominik would be instigating his father once more.

After further escalation during a Thanksgiving Dinner at the Mysterio home in which Dominik & Rhea both attacked Rey & Angie Mysterio respectively, Dominik Mysterio’s character developed into that of a former convict who had served time behind bars with “the world’s most dangerous people” for 24 hours. After Dominik officially laid down the challenge to his father for a one on one match at WrestleMania 39, and after being turned down yet again, Dominik’s decision to disrespect his mother & sister at ringside on the 24th of March 2023 broadcast of WWE SmackDown would be the final straw for Rey, who would attack his son and accept his challenge for Night 1 of WrestleMania 39. It would be 364 days after Dominik’s first WrestleMania Match that he would have his first one-on-one contest at the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’, where Rey Mysterio would defeat Dominik Mysterio thanks to interference from Bad Bunny and the newly revived Latino World Order.

‘DIRTY’ DOM, NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPION

In July of 2023, Dominik Mysterio’s convict presentation would further develop as he would be referred to as ‘Dirty’ Dominik Mysterio. In the peak of receiving the most thunderous of heel reactions, or ‘heat’ from the audience, Dominik Mysterio would become the first WWE Superstar to main event WWE Raw, WWE NXT and WWE SmackDown in the same week, after an Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship loss against Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn on the the 17th of July edition of WWE Raw, as well as claiming his first singles WWE Championship by defeating Wes Lee for the NXT North American Championship on the 18th of July broadcast of WWE NXT, which would be followed by his first championship defence against The Brawling Brutes’ Butch on the 22nd of July edition of WWE SmackDown. With successful championship defences against Sami Zayn, Wes Lee, Mustafa Ali and Dragon Lee under his belt, Mysterio would assist Rhea Ripley retain her Women’s World Championship against Raquel Rodriguez, as well as helping Finn Bàlor and ‘Señor Money In The Bank’ Damien Priest defeat Owens & Zayn to become the new Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions, draping The Judgement Day in multiple different championship belts and accolades.
